Bakersfield College
The Automotive Technology program at Bakersfield College offers 4 main areas where students can earn a certificate of achievement, which are Auto Engine Overhaul, Auto Power-Trans, Auto Brakes and Wheel Alignment, and Auto Tune-up & Emissions Systems. The Automotive Technology program will develop the student’s skills in the areas of automotive systems operation, trouble-shooting, maintenance and repair. Students will get both classroom instruction and hands on training.
Auto Engine Overhaul
The program will give students both the knowledge and the skills of automotive and light truck engine overhaul and machining procedures. In this program students will learn about theory of operation, diagnostic, and repair procedures. There is both a day and night program available. The required courses for the day program are Automotive Engine Overhaul, Automotive Engines Machining, and Introduction to Industrial Technology. For the night program the required courses are Introduction to Engine Overhaul, Engine Repair Techniques, Advanced Engine Overhaul, Advanced Engine Machining, Introduction to Industrial Technology. Students in this program also have to chose 24 units of elective from the following courses: Automotive Tune-Up: Electrical and Ignitions, Automotive Electricity, Automotive Emission Control Devices, Cooperative Work Experience Education, Special Problems in Automotives, Introduction to the Welding Processes.
Automotive Power Trains
This program will develop the student’s knowledge and skills in automotive and light truck standard and automotive transmissions, differential and drive train components. The courses that the students are required to take are Automatic Transmissions and Gear Boxes, Automotive Tune-Up: Electrical and Ignitions or Automotive Electricity, and Introduction to Industrial Technology
or Equivalent.
The elective courses that students must take at least 24 units of are Automotive Brakes, Suspension, Steering and Alignment, Advanced Automotive Performance & Emissions, Automotive Engine Overhaul or Introduction to Engine Overhaul, Cooperative Work Experience Education, Special Problems in Automotive, and Tig and MIG welding.
Auto Brakes and Wheel Alignment
This program will develop the student’s knowledge and skills in automotive brake and suspension systems operation, troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, and wheel alignment procedures. The required courses are Automotive Brakes, Suspension, Steering and Alignment, Automotive Electricity
or Automotive Tune-Up: Electrical and Ignitions, Introduction to Industrial Technology or Equivalent. Students must also complete at least 24 unites of these elective courses: Advanced Automotive Performance & Emissions, Automotive Engine Overhaul or Introduction to Engine Overhaul and Engine Repair Techniques Introduction to the Welding Processes, Cooperative Work Experience Education, and Special Problems in Automotive.
Auto Tune-up and Emission System
In this program students will learn about automotive and light truck tune-up and emission control systems. The program includes instruction in theory of ignition, fuel, and computer control systems as well as emission test procedures and complete diagnostic and repair procedures. The required courses for this program are Automotive Tune-Up: Electrical and Ignitions, Automotive Tune-Up: Fuel and Emissions, and Introduction to Industrial Technology or Equivalent. Students in this program have to complete at least 26 units from these courses: Automotive Air Conditioning, Advanced Automotive Electronics, Enhanced Area Clean Air Car Course, Introduction to Engine Overhaul or Automotive Engine Overhaul, Basic Electronics (DC and AC), Introductory Composition, Cooperative Work Experience Education, Special Problems in Automotives.
