Lawson State Community College - Alabama Center For Automotive Excellence

The Alabama Center For Automotive Excellence will prepare students for employment or advancement in the automotive service industry.  The Center has 6 different programs to meet students needs, which are Auto Body Repair, Auto Mechanics, Medium/Heavy Truck, and three auto mechanics programs sponsored by manufacturers - Ford ASSET, GM ASEP and Toyota T-TEN.

The certified areas at the Lawson State Community College - Alabama Center For Automotive Excellence are Automatic Transmission & Transaxle, Brakes, Electrical Electronic Systems, Engine Performance, Engine Repair, Heating and Air Conditioning, Manual Drive Train & Axles, and Suspension & Steering.

Students at the Alabama Center For Automotive Excellence are given extensive instruction in their chosen area as well as practical laboratory and shop experiences.  The Center’s students are then given the opportunity to participate in cooperative education work experience with dealerships in the area, as well as in independent repair facilities.  Not only will students receive a great education, they have the ability to work and earn money at the same time.

Automotive Body Repair

The Automotive Body Repair Program is an I-CAR certified training program that is specifically designed to teach students to repair damaged body and fender parts on vehicles.  The course includes the latest in repair technology, welding, shop safety, metal straightening, fiberglass repair and damage estimates.  Students will get the needed skills, which include all phases of auto body repair.  This program consists of one certificate.

Automotive Mechanics

The goal of the Automotive Mechanics Program is to thoroughly prepare students for successful employment or advancement as automotive technicians. The Automotive Mechanics Program is NATEF certified that will prepares students to diagnose mechanical problems and to make repairs to all components of automobiles.  The program involves attending on-campus classroom and laboratory sessions while at the same time participating in cooperative work experiences in the automotive industry.  This program consists of one AOT degree option, one certificate, and one certificate.

Medium and Heavy Truck Technician

The main goal of the Medium and Heavy Truck Program is to prepare students for successful employment or advancement as medium and heavy-duty diesel technicians.  The program will prepare students to diagnose mechanical problems on medium and heavy trucks and to make repairs to components of diesel-powered medium and heavy-duty trucks and equipment.  The program involves attending classes on campus and lab sessions as well as the chance to reinforce skills through cooperative work experiences in the diesel mechanics industry.

The Alabama Center For Automotive Excellence also has 3 programs for specific auto dealerships, which teach students about specific dealer models through classroom work and hands on training. These three programs are Ford ASSET - Automotive Student Service Education Training, Toyota T-TEN - Technical Education Network, and General Motors ASEP - Automotive Service Education Program.
